We spent a good part of the next two weeks at the vet’s office working out treatments for all sort of ailments, we spent a good part of our nights strategizing how to get her to stop crying, and we spent a good part of our paychecks on foods and brushes and all variety of squeaky toys. We had no idea how much work it was going to be. But on the flip side, we also had no idea how much we’d love her, and how dramatically she would improve our lives. Beyond the sheer joy of coming home to her wagging tail and happy doggy grin, Maisy’s uninhibited delight in simple things has brought aspects of my day-to-day that I’d come to take for granted into sharp focus: a colorful leaf falling slowly to the ground, a bird bathing in a fresh puddle of rain, the acrobatic silkiness of squirrels. Embarrassingly enough, before getting Maisy, I almost never went outside voluntarily in the fall and winter. I’m from the deep south, and I bitterly hate the cold. But with a dog, you HAVE to go outside – three times a day – and Maisy is positively ebullient in the snow. We got snow and rain gear, and these days, we’ve become practically out-doorsy. Given, Maisy was a relatively easy dog. While she did have a few health issues to work through, and an understandable fear of abandonment, she came housebroken, she knew how to fetch, and she is sweet and gentle as a dream. We just love Maisy so much, and we’re so grateful to Lucky Dog for bringing us together, and to our Lucky Dog consultants who helped counsel us through those first few weeks.

Thank you, Lucky Dog!<br

She has brightened our lives with her endless affection and unwavering love. It is truly a joy to see her play with other dogs at the park, an activity she can’t get enough of. With her fox-like appearance, disproportionably large ears, and friendly temperament, she has no problem making friends wherever she goes.

Introducing her to new experiences and helping her conquer her fears is very rewarding. Giving her a second chance at life after she was rescued from a high kill shelter makes this experience even greater. We could not be more grateful to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and the many volunteers who make it such a success.

We are very lucky to have found Stella, and we hope that many more adopters will experience the same joy Stella has brought us.
<p

Currently having two small dogs (Tootsie, chi and Benjamin, pom) we wanted to add a big dog to our family. After researching dog breeds we decided on a Saint Bernard. We wanted to give a dog a second chance with our family and that was made possible through Lucky Dog Rescue.

<a

She made sure that our pup would have a good temperament and would get along with small dogs. I picked up Quincy (previously Brutus) 4 days later and welcomed him into our home. He is the most obedient, well behaved, good mannered puppy one could ever ask for. I knew once I saw his face that he was a party of our family. He adapted to our dogs and our family instantly.

<a

They helped us locate the perfect dog! What a difference Lucky Dog as made for us. As our journey continues in life to give dogs a second chance at life- we would highly recommend working with Lucky Dog Rescue.
<p

He is a loved part of our family. We also wanted to comment on Wrigley’s foster mom, Saadia Cowan. Saadia has been a tremendous resource from the time we first met her and Wrigley to present day. Saadia has been able to tell us about her experience with our dog as well as share her experience with dogs as a whole. She continues to be a great sounding board and will remain a family friend to us and Wrigley.

We would imagine that most foster families care about the animals, but I am fairly confident that Saadia’s devotion to Wrigley and us is beyond what is expected of your foster families. We love our puppy and our new family friends Saadia, Marshall, Kayla and Max. Lucky Dog is truly lucky to have them as volunteers.
<div

We came back from our honeymoon and searched high and low for the perfect rescue place and the perfect pup. We found both.

We met with Lucky Dog foster AJ and “Hope” in mid-October and were amazed at the awesome job he and his roommate had done providing a nurturing home to her. You would have never guessed that she was a dog that just a month prior had been in a high-kill shelter. It was love at first sight and after the home visit we picked up our Stella.

In November, we enrolled her in a fantastic basic obedience program – she was the STAR of the class! We moved on to a Canine Good Citizen class and in early April she was certified with flying colors.

One big goal we have shared is to give back to hospitals and nursing homes through a pet therapy program. We saw the incredible difference it made when Arrin’s family dog Masey was brought to the hospital to spend time with her dad. We truly believe it helped to get him well enough to leave the hospital and added precious time to his life.

Stella has amazed us all (including her trainer) and starts her Therapy Dog class this Thursday. We will be tested for a Delta complex rating in mid-May and should all go well, Stella will spend time in elementary schools for the READ program, visit our grandparents in an assisted living center in Williamsburg, and with patients and family members at cancer centers in the area.

When she is not in class she is busy chasing an endless supply of tennis balls (Paul plays and coaches tennis) and swimming in the kiddy pool we put in the backyard. This summer she will spend many weekends at Lake Anna on the boat and she recovers from the day snuggled up on our bed.

Stella is a dog that is going to go on in life to make a big difference to the lives of many. We believe it is all thanks to you and the chance you took on rescuing a lab mix from a South Carolina shelter. You all are amazing.

Thanks for everything – we are grateful.

~Paul, Arrin & Stella Bristow
