How We Came To Live With Wyatt Earp

wyatt1I volunteered at an area shelter for over 5 years and know how many homeless animals are out there. All of our animals are rescues from the shelter where I worked. In the spring we were ready to adopt a new dog, having lost our senior lab mix in February. I searched the web and our local shelters for 3 months and I finally found Wyatt on Adoptapet. He just jumped out at me in a way that no other dog did. From the look in his eyes I felt like I knew him. Knowing that we cooperated with the ambitious mission of getting dogs out of kill shelters and at the same time got a dog who is extremely funny and loving is very gratifying to us.

We love Lucky Dog Animal Rescue’s model of cooperating with and saving animals from high kill shelters and getting many of them adopted by the time they arrive in DC. When I learned that the van was late because it had turned back after leaving to retrieve two more dogs I knew that I would have done the same thing. The group was fine and gave us some options, given that we are 3 hours away. The hardest part was waiting for our dog once we had fallen in love with him. He had some minor health issues (respiratory and urinary infections) that had to be cleared up, but this is common when dogs come out of shelters. You have to expect some minor issues. I was very happy that they treated his cough rather then euthanize him (which would occur in many kill shelters). Wyatt makes us laugh and we are very blessed to have him. He has even added a new element into obedience training: sit, down, stay, come, and bonk noses!
