Lucky Dog's June News

To My Lucky Dog Family,

A little over a week ago, a team of 18 volunteers and I spent 2 days with our partners in Puerto Rico. This was my 5th time bringing volunteers to Puerto Rico, and each time is different. Each time is rewarding. And, importantly, I learn more and more each time we go.

On Friday afternoon, our team of volunteers worked with representatives from the municipality of Cataño to help educate residents about an upcoming free vaccination clinic. We were also helping to conduct a census to determine how many animals lived in the municipality so that the local government could better serve their residents and pets.

While working in Cataño, of course we encountered street dogs. Our first rescue of the day was actually sleeping outside of the municipality's building. He was trying to find a bit of shade. And, though he was hesitant at first, he ended up coming right along with me into our lunch room to meet the group. "Cataño" is now at the PR Animals Pet Village getting ready for his trip to DC.

About an hour later, while Samantha was sitting on the curb answering emails, a short, scruffy dog walked up. And, from that point on, would not leave her side. "Matteo" chose us to save him.

At about the same time, one of our canvassing groups encountered a pack of four or five dogs roaming the street. There was a mom and her puppy -- both suffering from mange, a small, sweet puggle looking male, and a larger almost hairless dog whose eyes were almost glued shut with crust -- along with a few others. We worked hard to gain their trust, spending a lot of time giving treats and just trying to pet them. We knew we had to catch as many as possible. That is how we got "Jaws" -- the 2 month old puppy whose mom ultimately eluded us, "Chachi" -- the super sweet puggle who relaxed like a wet noodle in our arms, and "Rhino" -- the almost hairless lab mix who, once we cleared the crust from his eyes, acted like a blind man who was given back his sight.

Yet, even with all these rescues, our day was not over. We also took an older momma dog with day-old puppies. Every litter before this one had died, according to her owner. And, they wanted a different life for her this time.

Each of these animals is now getting critical medical care, either at the vet or at the PR Animals Pet Village. And, they joined Emilio, Fortuna, Suerte, Jackie and her 6 puppies -- all rescued during our trip.

Seeing where our Puerto Rico dogs come from is truly eye opening. Helping our rescue partners on the island with their daily chores at the Pet Village or as part of a feeding route is inspiring beyond words. And, knowing we can make a difference is what keeps us going back again and again.

When we rescue dogs off the streets, we don't consider cost. We see a need, and we act. Now, as we are slowly learning what vet care each animal requires, we need your help. YOUR SUPPORT. Please, consider making a life saving donation for one of our newest Puerto Rico Rescues.

Thank you on behalf of all our Lucky Dogs and Cats!
