My Journey Into Rescue -- It's All Thanks to My Grandmother!

My wonderful grandmother is a big-time animal lover. Feed the forest animals, feed all the stray cats in the neighborhood kind of animal lover. Her house is full of complimentary stationary, stickers, and tote bags from all of the animal-related nonprofits she supports. She was also a cat volunteer at the Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor, MI for well over ten years. Her dedication to animals, coupled with my lifelong love for cats (and all animals, but we can agree that cats are the best), is what made me want to volunteer with animals.

My Journey Into Rescue -- It Began With A Fluff Ball!

My journey into rescue began with a one pound fluff ball. While working one of my first jobs in my hometown, a guinea pig was surrendered from a hoarding situation. Her outlook was grim and several vets said she wouldn’t live more than a few months. She lived a beautiful 4 years and 6 months (time filled with piggy playdates, birthday parties, and veggie buffets) which I attribute to her resilience.

My Journey Into Rescue -- It All Began by Begging for A Dog!

The begging began at 8 years old. My kid brother and I pleaded with our parents to get a dog for months. They had both grown up with dogs and had many throughout their lives so it wasn't as if they weren't against the idea. However, they wanted to wait until we were old enough to help with the responsibilities of having a pet. They finally caved when I was in 4th grade and we adopted Lily, a Belgian malinois mutt, from our local shelter. She was the runt of the litter and very timid.

I am pretty sure that on Sunday, March 27, 2022 I was saved; this is the day I met Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. I wanted to make friends and love animals so I thought, “Why not go spend the day with a dog and help them find their forever home?". Colita was my first, but far from my last. My adventure has taken some turns that I never expected, and always enjoy. During that first event at the Silver Spring PetSmart with Colita I realized that this is something I wanted to be a part of. I also wondered, “How do they get all the pieces to run together so smoothly?”... I MUST find out.

I have loved animals, dogs specifically for as long as I can remember. I begged my parents for a dog, every time we walked past an adoption event, I wanted to rescue all the dogs. We had pets growing up and they were such a huge part of my life.

When I went to college I volunteered at a local animal shelter since I couldn’t have a dog of my own. My mom always said I needed a diploma and a job before I got a dog but I told her it sounded way better when you said diplomas and dogs. I graduated and the first thing I did was adopt my dog Cooper. He is absolutely my soul dog.

From a young age, my family have always enjoyed companionship of rescue German Shepherds. Growing up in a household where four-legged friends were not just pets but cherished family members, I loved coming home from school to cuddle up with our dogs. The German Shepherd we rescued while I was in High School was a particular favorite of mine. While we were still looking for a new pup to join our home, I said wanted to name our new dog Sadie. My parents insisted that you name a dog once you have met them, and we hadn’t identified a dog yet.

If you had told me 2.5 years ago that I would have 40 cats cycle through my 600 sq. feet apartment in the next 2.5 years, I would have said you were absolutely out of your mind. Not because I didn't like cats ... I thought cats were fine ... sometimes. But because I've always considered myself a dog person, and quite frankly, I had never had a cat. Plus, I was allergic.

To be honest, the story of my journey into rescue isn't very easy for me to write. Like many of the wonderful people that I work with in the animal welfare community, I've spent a lifetime loving animals. My childhood was heavily colored with experiences that included a variety of creatures, including ducks, chickens, rabbits, small mammals, cats, and dogs. But I never intended to dedicate my life to helping homeless pets.

My family did not have pets when I was growing up. (Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard the “but who’s going to pick up its poop at 6 in the morning??” spiel from your parents as you desperately beg them for a puppy). I knew that dogs and cats existed, I knew they were cute and (sometimes) cuddly, but I also knew they were a lot of work. And in my college years and early 20’s, I wasn’t about that high-maintenance, wake-up-early, spend-your-money-on-vet-visits-and-dog-food dog mom life, until…

It all began with our collie and boxer mixed dog named Beauty. Some years later the pet parakeets arrived, then, within a few years, a beautiful lost calico cat arrived which unknowingly to us was pregnant and a few weeks later delivered four kittens. Two were adopted and the other two lived with us. Soon enough along came four gerbils whom my sister volunteered to watch over the holidays for her grade school class.
