Dog Language

beagle

Developed to keep peace and harmony within the pack, calming signals may very well make up the largest part of a dogs communication system. These signals are used in most dog/dog interactions to avoid or cut-off conflict. They are often used with people too. When two dogs first see each other they usually begin to use these signals, they continue to use them during the initial meeting and play sessions. It unfolds something like a subtle dance that often goes completely unnoticed by people.

Dog Behavior: People and Kids

kids

A new baby in the house can be very stressful for new parents, especially if there are other children to care for. You might feel that you no longer have time for your pet, or the pet might be a danger for your child. Don't believe any of the old wives' tales about animals being vindictive and jealous towards children, most pets accept new children when it's handled correctly, and if you are prepared to work with your pet. Most problems result from pack order problems - the dog does not want to relinquish his status in your "pack". You should start well before your new arrival.

Puppy Nipping and Rough Play

nipping

It's not always easy to convince a new puppy not to bite the hand that feeds him, pets him, or plays with him, for that matter. When puppies play with each other, they use their mouths, so they may also be inclined to bite or "mouth" your hand during play or when being petted. This is rarely aggressive behavior meant to do harm, but it is a difficult habit to break unless you encourage your puppy to try an acceptable alternative behavior. The goal is to redirect your puppy's energy onto acceptable chew toys, and to teach her to be gentle when a hand is in or near her mouth.

Why Dogs Bark

bark

Dogs have a lot to say, and they do it by barking. They bark to go out, come in, to tell you a stranger's in your yard, and at people, cars, and other animals. Too much barking or barking at inappropriate times can be a problem. You want to be respectful of your neighbors as well as local laws, so you need to get your dog's barking under control.
