LUCKY DOG ANIMAL RESCUE TEAMS UP WITH THE PETCO FOUNDATION, WINGS OF RESCUE AND AMERICAN PETS ALIVE TO HELP HOMELESS ANIMALS FLY TO SAFETY IN ADVANCE OF HURRICANE LAURA AS WELL AS ASSIST EVACUATE ANIMALS FROM AREA SHELTERS AFTER THE STORM!

On August 26th, 2020 Lucky Dog Animal Rescue teamed up with the Petco Foundation, Wings of Rescue, and Houston PetSet to coordinate a massive airplane evacuation in advance of Hurricane Laura, evacuating more than 130 cats and dogs from the storm’s path. This lifesaving transport ensured that each animal on board not only survived the storm but also would find loving forever homes. Funding for this lifesaving transport was generously provided by the Petco Foundation. The animals came from Bayou Animal Services (Dickinson, TX); Animal Aid Brigade (Houston, TX); Webster Animal Shelter, SPCA of Brazoria County (Lake Jackson, TX), Montgomery County Animal Shelter and Fort Bend Animal Shelter– all locations in the path of the incoming hurricane.

“In times of national disasters, we must all step up and help those who are so often left behind,” said Mirah Horowitz, Founder and Executive Director of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. “We are extremely grateful to the Petco Foundation, Wings of Rescue, and all the partner organizations for pulling together this last minute life-saving flight. We are excited to find these animals homes in the DC area!”

On September 3rd, Lucky Dog welcomed more than 20 dogs to DC area after they were evacuated from the aftermath of Hurricane Laura. The majority of these animals are coming from Bayou Animal Services (Dickinson, TX) where they were enrolled in a correctional facility training program. Additional animals came from the Bastrop County Animal Shelter which is still without power and in need of significant structural repairs. Each of these animals will find safety with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue (Arlington, VA) and will enable Lucky Dog’s shelter partners in impacted areas to focus on rebuilding and caring for emerging pets in need.

“We are excited to welcome these new Lucky Dogs to the family,” said Mirah Horowitz, Founder and Executive Director of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. “Since the Hurricane hit, we have been working with shelters on the ground to ensure they have the support they need during this difficult time. The most important thing we can do to help is care for these animals so they can focus on recovery.”
