Exercise For Your Dog Beyond The "Walk"

Why some dogs have too much energy and excitement

The role of the family dog has changed quite a bit. Years ago most dogs lived their life outdoors with a job to do, but today most of our dogs nowadays live as couch potatoes with no job. They are our companions that we love unconditionally but sometimes we as humans forget the amount of mental and physical stimulation our furry companions need to thrive.

Lack of mental and physical stimulation can lead to excessive energy, anxiety, barking, reactivity, chewing, garbage raiding, and general unruliness around the house. Mental stimulation, discussed further in other articles on this website, is just as important as physical exercise.

Physical exercise ideas

It is important to realize that there are many other ways to get your dog the physical exercise they need other than just walks.

  • Play fetch or tug.
  • Take a hike through the woods or your nearest trail -- letting them sniff around.
  • Take them to the dog park (if your dog does well around multiple dogs).
  • Learn how to treadmill train your dog. A treadmill can be used when the weather is not suitable for walking and it can also help your dog build confidence.
  • Take an agility class. Jumping through hoops, hurdles, and over A-Frames is a great way to also build confidence, and gain mental and physical stimulation.
  • Take your dog swimming. There are a few places around here and in Maryland that offer swimming lessons for dogs. It can be great for senior dogs to get exercise and also can help build confidence in shy dogs.
