To My Lucky Dog Family,

One year ago, our world changed. It turned upside down and on its head.

Everything about Lucky Dog Animal Rescue changed -- just as everything about everyday life changed. One year ago, we didn't know if we'd even be able to keep saving animals through the pandemic. We didn't know if we'd be able to secure enough funding to keep our operations going. There was so much uncertainty and so much fear. Yet, somehow we kept going and found our path. With YOU.

One year later, there is still uncertainty and fear. But, now there is hope. And, optimism and love. Things that seemed so distant one year ago are now making their way back into our lives. And, I think it is in large part because of our pets.

Lucky Dog saw an unprecedented number of adoptions and rescued an unprecedented number of animals. People were searching for a connection. For unconditional love. For a reason to get out of bed and take the next step forward.

For long time animal lovers, the impact of having a dog or cat was not unknown. Truth be told, I adopted my first dog Sparky because I was lonely, living 3,000 miles away from my family in a new place without a strong support system. Sparky got me out of bed and to the dog park. I made lasting friendships and discovered my passion for animal rescue.

It isn't just owning a pet that has helped people through this pandemic. Having a volunteer community like Lucky Dog has been a lifeline for so many. Knowing I am not just saving dogs and cats but improving the lives of the humans who adopt them has meant more to me during the last year than ever before.

Some people in animal welfare think 2020 was an aberration in terms of people's interest in adopting, volunteering, and supporting rescue efforts. I disagree. I think people are continuing to recognize how important our work is. How much a dog or cat can change a person's life for the better. And, how much meaning you can get out of volunteering to improve the lives of people and pets around you.

Looking back on the past year, I don't know that I would have survived without my Lucky Dog family. Without your dedication to our mission and to our animals. Without your compassion and your support. So, I wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for all you do for me -- and for Lucky Dog.

I hope to "see" you all on March 13th when I co-host our virtual festival Mix & Match Madness. We can all raise a glass to the many lives saved and the many more still to come.

Thank you on behalf of all the Lucky Dogs and Cats,
