To My Lucky Dog Family,

Last month, as I wrote to you about our work evacuating animals from the path of Hurricane Dorian, we were preparing to drive down to Florence, South Carolina to assist our team as the storm passed through. We did not know what would happen -- only that the animals would need us.

Luckily, the storm did not end up being as destructive as we feared. But, despite this fact, there were still animals in need. And, Lucky Dog was there to save them. In the height of the wind and rain, we learned of not one but three dogs that were living on chains and being battered by the elements.

The first dog, who we named Dorian, had been abandoned by his family when they moved away 2 weeks before the hurricane hit. Rather than take him with them -- or even find him another home -- they left him chained to a tree in their yard with no food or water. A good samaritan had been feeding him, but feared for his safety as the wind and rain grew in strength.

We rushed over once we heard about his situation, getting him to safety. He is now with volunteers in South Carolina awaiting life-saving heartworm treatment.

Just as we were leaving the home that Dorian was left at, we learned of two additional dogs chained up at "the tire store," which turned out to be more of a junkyard. Each one "lived" amongst rusted cars and piles of rubbish. Neither saw humans regularly nor received affection of any kind. Yet, despite that, these dogs were happy. Optimistic. And eager to see us.

Jonah and Marty quickly became favorites of our volunteers. And, both were adopted only one week after they arrived in the DC area!

Like many animal rescues, Lucky Dog saves dogs and cats on a daily and weekly basis. But, what makes us unique, is that we don't shy away from the difficult situations. We head toward challenge rather than away from it. We drive into the storm -- literally and figuratively -- when animals are in need.

That is what we are celebrating in a little over a week and a half at our upcoming Casino Night. Ten years and over 15,000 lives saved. Over 15,000 families made complete by adopting a Lucky Dog or Cat. Casino Night is our BIGGEST fundraising event of the year. Every dollar we raise will go towards saving even more Lucky Dogs and Cats. It's a night to celebrate all that we have accomplished and to prepare for all that is to come.
