BISON NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!

Come meet Bison and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (April 28th) from 12-3 pm at the Petsmart in Silver Spring (12020 Cherry Hill Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20904)!

Name:   Bison        Best Guess for Breed:  Shepherd and terrier mix

Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of January 2024      SEX:  Male

Approximate Weight:  50 lbs

Gets Along With:  Other dogs! We haven’t seen Bison with kids, but he can be tested. We have tested him with some of the cats at the shelter, and he did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that he could live with a cat, he has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack!

Currently Living at:  DC foster!

Special adoption considerations: Bison is a truly Lucky Dog! He tested positive for Heartworm disease but has already been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites.  Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the screening process.

About Bison:

Bison is ready to be part of your adventure!  Bison is always charging ahead looking for the latest exciting thing whether it’s human or canine.  He enjoys walks, especially in cooler weather when he can go longer, and generally walks well with a loose leash. He loves rough and tumble play with doggy playmates, and he’s very excited to make new friends when he’s out and about.  Sometimes he’s a little too excited but he’s responsive to cues, eager to please, and motivated by treats!  He can entertain himself playing with his toys, tossing them in the air just to make sure they keep moving!

At home, Bison is all about adoring his humans. He follows people around the house to make sure he doesn’t miss anything. He has a favorite spot where he can sit on a big chair, chin propped up, watching the kitchen when that is where the action is. He got up on the couch and sat with his fosters’ grandchildren, ages 7 and 11, when they visited, and he loves snuggles!  He’s a good boy–he generally knows which items are his and which aren’t, and when he needs to go, he will go to the foster’s patio door or look at them and bark!

Bison has so many smiles, so many adoring gazes and tail wags, so much energy and zest for life, so much love and loyal companionship to give his forever family.  He’s a goofy and amiable companion, enjoying car rides, snuggling on the couch, and generally being a part of whatever you’re doing.  Could Bison be your trusty life companion?

Foster Update 1/24:

Bison is a lot calmer at home. He loves to play and has been enjoying the snow. Loves balls and tough chew toys. We’ve been working on helping him to relax more around his triggers. Meeting and seeing other dogs outside and on walks is still a work in progress for him. He responds well with positive reinforcement and is very food motivated. His recall is getting better under low distraction. He also now can sit and wait to be released to eat his food. He loves to snuggle and likes to sleep on the bed under the covers!
