Giving Back to Our Furry Friends

Coming off the tail-end of National Justice for Animals Week, we want to keep the momentum of awareness going. Animal advocacy is a continuous effort; the need to give a voice to the voiceless never ends. We at Lucky Dog Animal Rescue are incredibly proud of the work we do each and every day to make sure homeless and abandoned dogs and cats have a chance at a loving forever home.  Since our founding in 2009, we have successful rescued over 11,00 animals, and we're not stopping there!  We need your help to make an even bigger impact, save even more lives, and help even more families find the unconditional love that a dog or cat can bring.

How can you help?

Donate
First and foremost, donating money, no matter how small of an amount, goes such a long way when given to the right organization or individual.  You want to be sure your donation goes to the care of animals.  At Lucky Dog, we are proud to say that 100% of all funds we raise goes directly to the rescue and rehabilitation of our dogs and cats.

We stretch every dollar as far as we can, partnering with amazing organizations that are committed to our rescue mission. Organizations like:
  • Wagtime and Wagtime Too, Washington, DC
  • The Board Hound, Arlington, VA
  • The Ruff House, Rockville, MD
  • Palisades Veterinary Hospital, Washington, DC
  • Friendship Hospital for Animals, Washington, DC
  • Spot on Training, Washington, DC
  • Dogma Bakery, Shirlington, VA
Our animals come from underfunded and understaffed shelters throughout the rural south.  We also partner closely with rescuers in Puerto Rico and have been working hard to help them after their island was devastated by Hurricane Maria.  We regularly send in-kind donations like food, bedding, collars and leashes back to these shelters, and we reimburse our partners for as much animal care as we can to ensure that their own dollars go further.
    • Florence County Environmental Services Animal Control, SC
    • PAWS of Hertford County, NC
    • Martinsville & Henry County SPCA, Martinsville, VA
    • Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Gloucester, VA
    • P.R. Animals of Puerto Rico
    • Lenoir County SPCA, NC
    Volunteer
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is a
volunteer-powered organization, meaning we would be nowhere without the selfless, passionate individuals who donate their time to serving our mission.
There are an endless amount of ways to give your time, whether it is a one time thing or something you want to do on a weekly or even daily basis!  You can give it a try by volunteering to
    • Handle dogs when they meet prospective adopters during adoption events.
    • Drive dogs from boarding or foster homes to events or vet appointments.
    • Visit potential foster or adopter homes to ensure the home is a good fit.

Or, you can get more involved by learning more about our recurring roles:

    • Adoption Coordinator
    • Event Coordinator
    • Adoption Screener
    • Foster Screener
    • Volunteer Liaison
    • Master Handler

And don’t forget that local shelters are always looking for people to come and spend time with their cats, walk the dogs, and help with shelter upkeep. No task is too small and will be immensely appreciated.

    Host a Fundraiser
One of the most powerful ways to get the attention of and engage a community is to hold an event, and the best part is, anyone can do it! You don’t even need to be directly affiliated with a shelter or organization.

Online event management platforms like Eventbrite make it easy to plan a non-profit fundraiser, and the ideas for what kind of event to put on are endless. Hold a bake sale, a dog-washing marathon, a beer tasting, a paint night — anything that will bring your local community together — and then donate the proceeds to the organization of your choice.

We hold our own Wags & Wine Extravaganza each year, and our 9th annual event is this Saturday, March 10th!

    • When6-9pm
    • Where: Barrel Oak Winery

    Tickets are on sale now!

    Foster or Adopt
Finally, perhaps the most powerful of all the things you can do, is to become a foster or consider adopting your own companion, when the time is right.

Both are incredibly important commitments that you need to consider carefully.  One of the biggest misconceptions about fostering or adopting is that the dogs or cats are somehow damaged or broken.  That is simply not the case!!  These are animals that simply need a second chance to earn someone's love.   If you're not sure if you're ready for the commitment of owning a dog or cat, fostering is a great way to go!  We have to different fostering programs: our overnight program (keeping a dog for just one night) and our full time fostering program (keeping a dog or cat until they are adopted!)

There are so many ways you can get involved and help a Lucky Dog or Cat.  We hope to see you at an event soon!

P.S. Don’t forget to get tickets for our 9th Annual Wags & Wine event, happening this Saturday!
