When you make a commitment to an animal to be their caretaker, advocate, and have them become a member of the family, you make them a promise that you will do everything in your power to do what is best for them. That means having the best doctors and technicians involved in their care, gathering as much information to allow you to make informed decisions about their health, and also tending to their physical and emotional needs.
This Wednesday, September 12, 2018, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue evacuated more than 50 Lucky Dogs and Cats from the path of Hurricane Florence. After the van's alternator failed, the rescue community took time out of their own hurricane preparations to save our Lucky Dogs and Cats.
While I’m not a behaviorist, and would suggest anyone whose pet seems to have severe or chronic issues seek the guidance of a board certified veterinary behaviorist, I have gleaned some really valuable tips through study and observation over the years. In particular, I’ve noticed the importance of proper socialization and positive reinforcement for puppies so they grow into confident adults.
This is a question that many dog owners dread. Within the last week, news broke of a potential link between grain-free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). DC-based cardiology specialty group, Cheseapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates, noticed an increase in DCM cases in atypical breeds and began to look for common denominators. Grain-free diets appear to be a possible link.

This past weekend, 18 Lucky Dog volunteers visited our rescue partners in Puerto Rico as part of our 4th annual visit (our first after Hurricane Maria). On our first day, we visited PR Animals' Pet Village where our volunteers helped clean, walk and feed dogs and cats. Lucky Dog also announced our ongoing sponsorship of 5 kennels.
