Getting a dog can be very overwhelming. Welcoming a new family member is so exciting that some crucial things can often go overlooked. The first thing to do is often finding a good and responsible vet that will know how to help you in maintaining your new dog's well being throughout his life.
This Labor Day, September 2, 2019, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue evacuated 19 Lucky Dogs from the path of Hurricane Dorian. Volunteers have stepped up throughout the DC Metro Area to provide temporary shelter to these new arrivals.
“My dog HATES going to vet!” “Clipping my dog’s nails is a full out wrestling match!” “My dog runs away when the bathtub runs!” If any of these comments or sentiments sound familiar, learning the “cooperative care” approach can help. Cooperative care involves training and teaching animals to participate in and/or allow handling to reduce fear, anxiety & stress (FAS). There is a multitude of ways to approach this process.
The role of the family dog has changed quite a bit. Years ago most dogs lived their life outdoors with a job to do, but today most of our dogs nowadays live as couch potatoes with no job. They are our companions that we love unconditionally but sometimes we as humans forget the amount of mental and physical stimulation our furry companions need to thrive.
In our previous posts, we have talked about Fear Free Certification and helping our pets to become more comfortable prior to veterinary visits. This month we’ll take a look into the Practice Certification process itself. Practice Certification takes the components of the Fear Free certification one step further and asks the entire practice to work together as a whole to achieve this goal.
February is usually one of the most challenging times of year for dog parents -- when outside there are freezing temperatures but your furry friend still wants to play! As we dread facing the cold outside, the walks tend to get shorter, which means less moving and sniffing outside, so less physical and mental exercise. This is when dog parents might see their dogs start to bounce off the walls. The good news is that just like physical exercise makes a dog tired, so does mental stimulation. In an ideal world we always want a good balance of both.
Thanks to the hard work of our many volunteers, Lucky Dog rescued 1918 animals and completed 2025 adoptions in 2018. Click here to learn more!
Last month, we discussed an overview of the Fear Free Certification program for veterinary professionals, including what the program is, how to find a certified professional and why the program is valuable. This month, we will look into how we as owners can help to make our pets more comfortable prior to their appointments. I have some personal experience on this front, having both a cat and a dog who are not always thrilled to "come to work with Mom."
Potty accidents can happen even with adult, previously house-trained dogs. It is not at all obvious to dogs that the bathroom rules in one place apply to everywhere else.
