Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is a volunteer-powered, foster-based non-profit.  Our greatest asset is our volunteers - the time, energy, dedication, and expertise that they bring! The more volunteers we have, the more Lucky Dogs we save!

You can help make every dog a Lucky Dog!

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Shares How You Can Help

Are you someone under the age of 18 that would like to put their energy towards helping dogs in need?   We would love to have your help.

Lucky Kids Club was designed to involve kids in our mission of rescuing homeless and abandoned animals, primarily dogs from rural high-kill shelters where they don’t have a good chance of survival.   We want to see the day that there are NO MORE HOMELESS PETS!   We can’t do it without you!

Every 2-3 weeks, a big transport of dogs rolls up to DC from South Carolina, bringing 50-60 new Lucky Dogs ready to find their forever homes.  Wouldn't you love to be part of the welcoming party?

When the dogs arrive, we need help taking them for walks off the van, giving them water, and getting them fitted with our special no-slip martingale collars and Lucky Dog ID tags.  There is nothing like the joy of a dog when he or she leaps off the van giving kisses along the way!

Lucky Dog could not survive without fosters. We pull dogs from the shelters just hours or even minutes before they are scheduled to be euthanized often before we have the opportunity to line up adopters or sponsors.

Our generous foster parents are ready and willing to provide temporary housing and lots of love. Foster parents allow us to rescue dogs just in the knick of time. Some fosters only have their Lucky Dogs long enough for a bath, a good meal, and a safe night's sleep.  Others have their Lucky Dogs long enough to work on training, to develop trust, and to recover from injuries or ailments - all to help them transition smoothly into their forever homes.

Lucky Dog's Adoption Coordinators (ACs) are involved in facilitating the placement of adoptable dogs into their new homes through marketing the dogs for adoption and screening potential adopters. Each Lucky Dog that is available for adoption is assigned an AC who is ultimately responsible for finding them an appropriate home. The AC screens potential adopters, facilitates the adoption and serves as a resource for adopters as their new Lucky Dog transitions into their home. Adoption coordinators complete a one-time training and are paired with a seasoned AC to mentor them through the beginning months. ACs are asked to attend a minimum of 3 events (2 Sunday adoption events and one transport) each month.

Volunteers at adoption events are critical to our success. Volunteers handle dogs at the events, sharing their story with potential adopters. What better way to get a doggie fix? All it takes is a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Most events run from 12-2pm, and we ask our volunteers to arrive around 11:30 and stay until about 2:15. Children have to be at least 12 years old to volunteer with a parent, and 18 years old to handle a dog on their own.

We also need volunteers to give rides to dogs from fosters who can't make it to the adoption event and to dogs from our boarding partners. Our boarding dogs are the ones who need the adoption events the most -- they're sometimes the only opportunity for the boarding dogs to be seen!! All you need is a valid drivers license and proof of insurance!

Lucky Dog's ability to save dogs is directly dependent on the number of volunteers we have!

Each dog needs:

And, of course, all the dogs benefit from all the administrative functions that volunteers preform every day!
